One KEG, Different Dispensing Systems: The Idea Behind KEG ONE
Updated: Sep 24
Reusable stainless-steel KEGs are designed to last for many years. However, the beverage industry uses different dispensing and connection systems. This can limit the flexibility of existing KEGs and create additional logistical, technical and financial challenges.
KEG ONE is being developed as a technical solution to this problem.
The challenge: different KEGs for different systems
Breweries, beverage producers, distributors and hospitality businesses may encounter different dispensing systems depending on the country, market, customer or beverage.
In practice, this can mean:
- different KEG variants for different dispensing systems;
- additional storage and logistics requirements;
- reduced flexibility when KEGs are returned from another market;
- increased effort for sorting, maintenance and refurbishment;
- existing stainless-steel KEGs becoming difficult to reuse in another application;
- additional material consumption when new KEG variants are required.
Although a stainless-steel KEG may remain mechanically usable for many years, its connection system can restrict where and how it can be used.
The KEG ONE concept
KEG ONE is an innovative adapter and technical interface intended to enable different dispensing systems to be connected to reusable KEG containers.
The goal is not to replace the KEG itself. The aim is to make existing stainless-steel KEGs more flexible by developing a standardised interface that could support different connection requirements.
The concept originates from many years of practical experience in the repair, refurbishment and neutralisation of KEGs. This experience demonstrated that many containers could potentially remain in circulation if their connection systems were more adaptable.
Why could a universal connection be valuable?
A successfully developed KEG ONE solution could offer several potential advantages.
Greater compatibility
A standardised interface could allow a KEG to be prepared for different dispensing systems without requiring a completely different container design for every application.
Better reuse of existing KEGs
Existing stainless-steel KEGs could potentially be adapted for another customer, beverage producer or market instead of being taken out of circulation because of an incompatible connection.
Reduced material consumption
Producing fewer specialised KEG variants could help reduce the demand for additional stainless steel, manufacturing energy and other resources.
Simpler logistics
Greater compatibility could simplify sorting, storage, refurbishment and redistribution within KEG pools and international supply chains.
Support for the circular economy
Extending the useful life and possible applications of existing containers is consistent with the principles of reuse, resource efficiency and the circular economy.
What must be tested?
KEG ONE is currently in an early development phase. Before any industrial application can be considered, a functional prototype must be developed and independently tested.
The planned validation should examine:
- compatibility with relevant KEG and dispensing systems;
- pressure resistance;
- leak tightness;
- mechanical strength and durability;
- required operating force and torque;
- hygienic design and cleanability;
- material suitability for contact with beverages;
- user and operational safety;
- compliance with applicable standards;
- requirements for future product certification.
These tests are essential. KEG ONE must demonstrate not only that the connection principle works, but also that it can meet the demanding technical, hygienic and safety requirements of the beverage industry.
Innovation requires cooperation
The next development stage requires cooperation with:
- research organisations and universities;
- specialists in materials science and mechanical engineering;
- accredited testing laboratories;
- KEG manufacturers and refurbishment companies;
- breweries and beverage producers;
- dispensing-system specialists;
- certification and intellectual-property experts;
- Technology Scouts and innovation partners.
KEG ONE is also being prepared for possible support through the Technology Scouting Programme DIGIT.1.2.02. The objective is to move from the current concept toward a functional, tested and validated Proof of Concept.
A Croatian application for the protection of the technical solution has already been submitted, and the establishment of KEG ONE Innovation j.d.o.o. is in its final stage.
We are looking for professional feedback
KEG ONE is not being presented as a finished product. It is a technical concept that now requires engineering development, testing and input from the industry.
We would therefore appreciate feedback from professionals working with KEGs, beverage production, dispensing systems, logistics, stainless-steel processing, testing or technology transfer.
- Where could a universal KEG interface provide the greatest benefit?
- Which technical requirements should receive the highest priority?
- What practical obstacles must be considered?
- Would greater compatibility simplify KEG management in your business?
- Would your organisation be interested in testing or developing the concept with us?
Professional criticism is welcome because it can help us identify realistic applications and define the correct requirements for the prototype.
Help us take the next step
KEG ONE aims to connect technical innovation with the long-term reuse of valuable stainless-steel containers.
One KEG cannot solve every challenge in the beverage industry. But a more flexible connection concept could help existing KEGs remain useful across more applications and markets.
If you have experience, technical expertise or an interest in cooperation, we would be pleased to hear from you.
